Journaling for a Change

Do you journal?  It is a great tool for reflecting on life, processing events and emotions, and finding new perspectives.

Some people think journaling is just “adult diary-ing.”  And for some, a journal really is just a place to put down the events of the day (really, that is your perceptions of the events of the day).  It is just a way to record what happened and move forward.

Then, others use their journal to look for themes and insights.  Deeper than just a running commentary of life, journaling becomes an activity of insight and perspective.

But what happens when you want to journal, but find yourself facing an empty page… not even sure what to write?  What if you actually do write something?  How do you shift to a point of reflection and perspective?

Those two questions stop lots of people who want to journal from ever committing to the process.  Or from actually learning from the process.

What if there was a tool that solved both of those dilemmas?

Kim AdesEnter my colleague, Kim Ades.  Her coaching services use a journaling process to connect coach and client.  But Kim knew the tool she built for that journaling had the potential to help others in their journaling… without the coaching component.

In this episode of Thriveology Podcast, Kim and I discuss the power of journaling, along with how you can try her journaling tool for free… to see the transformational power of journaling.

Comfort and Joy: Deepening the Holidays

Finding your comfort and joy in the holidays! In the hustle and bustle, people lose sight of the Holidays.  Sure, we go through the motions, show up to the events, and try to put on our holiday joy.  But many times, internally, its a flat-line.  Nothing.  Nada.

Or worse… stressful.

Over the years, I have given a number of presentations about this, with title, “Merry Stress-ness and Happy Blue Year.”  Stressed out and depressed.

That’s not a great way to spend the Holidays!

It misses something… deeper.  More significant.  Something that nurtures the soul and feeds the heart.

How do you deepen the Holidays for yourself (and for those close to you)?  We discuss it in this episode of the Thriveology Podcast.

Damaged, Resilient, or Thriving? #30 Thriveology Podcast

Are you damaged, resilient, or thriving? For a century or so, our culture has become increasingly “psychologized.”  Something bad happens to you, your psyche is injured, and your option is to realize what happened to you.  That is, generally, the topic of therapy:  discovering the roots of your injury.  In fact, perhaps on a bad day, Sigmund Freud said that the goal of therapy was to move from neurosis to common, ordinary, everyday unhappiness.  Not a particularly lofty goal!  This is a deficit model.

More recently, the model of resilience has taught that some fortunate people can have the same injury, but manage to make it back to “normal.”  Somehow, the trauma does not affect them in a negative way.  This is a “break even model.”

There are a small number of voices that have realized that every injury is truly a challenge — an opportunity for growth.  It is possible to take a hurt, pain, tragedy, challenge, or trauma, and use it as a springboard for growth.  This model is the “plus model,” a thriving model.

Which model captures you?  Can you move to (or even more into) a thriving model?  Join me in this week’s podcast to learn about the 3 models and how to move into a thriving model.
