The final piece of the Thrive Code is all about how we feel about others. Do we see others as “other” or as connected to us? Do we use compassion or do we objectify?

I have a built in belief that we are born with compassion. Babies and children have a natural compassionate response to others in pain. But many times, people are taught to not have a compassionate response. We are taught beliefs about why others are having problems. Often, those beliefs are based in blame and condemnation.

It is no surprise, then, that we are living in a compassion crisis. Both in terms of compassion for others and self-compassion.

Is there a way back? Yes! And it starts with understanding exactly what compassion is, where it comes from, why we lose it, and how we can cultivate it. Learn more in this episode of the Thriveology Podcast.

For whatever reason, we could spend lots of time asking a question, shaking and flipping the 8-Ball, and study our answer. Of course, if we didn’t like the answer, we would just shake it again and get another answer.

On a side note, I always wondered why an 8 ball from billiards was ever supposed to be “magical” in answering questions. I recently read that Brunswick Billiards bought the rights to the toy as some point. So, no, nothing magical about an 8 ball, except for the billiards company being involved!

Anyway, there was this one answer that always left me frustrated: Reply hazy, try again.

Naturally, I would. I’d just shake again and try for another answer. But I remember this one time… I just kept getting the same answer — Reply hazy, try again. So, I kept trying again. And I didn’t get anywhere!

Well, life can be that way. When things aren’t clear, it can be frustrating and paralyzing. If we don’t have clarity about some decisions, sometimes we do nothing.

It turns out that having some clarity helps to make life easier. It helps us to thrive.

But, and this is important, seeking clarity is quite a help in thriving. In fact, when we seek clarity, we tend to find enough of it to move forward. And sense clarity changes over time, you do have to keep seeking it. What was clear… what made sense… at one point or stage in life, may no longer make sense at another point. So, we have to keep seeking clarity — and finding it along the way.

This is the code. The Thrive Code.

My response: No. Well, not just that. Sure, being happy is fine. No need to avoid being happy! But that is only one dimension of life.

It IS the dimension of life that hedonism celebrates and pursues. If it feels good, do it. Enjoy life. Have a good time. Seek out pleasure and avoid pain.

Except that doesn’t lead much to thriving. It posits your satisfaction with life externally to you. It is THAT thing that makes you happy, brings you pleasure, makes life worthwhile.

Eudaimonia was the counterpoint in greek thought. This is the pursuit of life satisfaction by what things mean to you internally. It is how you bring meaning, enjoyment, and satisfaction into your life from within.

And there is a cornerstone of that: Contribution. What we GIVE to the world, versus what we GET from the world. Giving versus Taking.

Research has long pointed out the power of giving and contributing to the mental health, wellbeing, meaning/purpose, and satisfaction of people to their lives. Which is why it is part of The Thrive Code.

Listen below to learn why contribution matters and some principles of doing it.

 <itunes:summary>When I talk about Thriveology, many people say, “Oh, that is more of that ‘being happy’ stuff, isn’t it?"<br />
<br />
My response: No. Well, not just that. Sure, being happy is fine. No need to avoid being happy! But that is only one dimension of life.<br />
<br />
It IS the dimension of life that hedonism celebrates and pursues. If it feels good, do it. Enjoy life. Have a good time. Seek out pleasure and avoid pain.<br />
<br />
Except that doesn’t lead much to thriving. It posits your satisfaction with life externally to you. It is THAT thing that makes you happy, brings you pleasure, makes life worthwhile.<br />
<br />
Eudaimonia was the counterpoint in greek thought. This is the pursuit of life satisfaction by what things mean to you internally. It is how you bring meaning, enjoyment, and satisfaction into your life from within.<br />
<br />
And there is a cornerstone of that: Contribution. What we GIVE to the world, versus what we GET from the world. Giving versus Taking.<br />
<br />
Research has long pointed out the power of giving and contributing to the mental health, wellbeing, meaning/purpose, and satisfaction of people to their lives. Which is why it is part of The Thrive Code.<br />
<br />
Listen below to learn why contribution matters and some principles of doing it.<br />

Stuck?

Research psychologist, Carol Dweck, says that there are two mindsets we can have: fixed and growth.

In the fixed mindset, we think we are just the way we are. Our personalities and skills are just a part of who we are. “A natural athlete/writer/salesman/comedian,” or whatever else. We just are born with those skills… or personalities.

In a growth mindset, we can learn… grow and change. We can get better in something we want to improve. No, that doesn’t mean that anyone can be a world-class athlete. But if I want to improve my abilities, I can. If I want to shoot better free-throws, I can practice. If I want to improve my writing, I can practice. I can get better through, learning, effort, and practice.

It seems obvious when we look at it that way, but many of us accidentally fall into a fixed mindset, both of ourselves and others. Experts change their recommendations, and we can either see that as a failure on their part, “wishy-washy” and up to no good. Or we can see that they, too, are learning and sharing from what they are learning. Fixed or growth.

And we can also look at how we, ourselves, are learning to shift, pivot, alter, and change our lives in the face of a pandemic. When we get back to normal, it won’t be the normal of December 2020. It will be different. How will we shift?

When I started jiu jitsu, I was already in my 50’s, having spent a lifetime interested in martial arts. I spent a few years in my teens in tae kwon do, and decided that if I was going to give a martial art another try, “It’s now or never.”

Little did I know just how rich an experience it would be when I went to jiu jitsu that first time.

Enough so that at several points, I have stopped to reflect on what new lessons I was learning on my continuing journey through white belt, into blue belt.

While I was away, my wife and I were coordinating with our adult children, trying to make sure we could get them to our home before travel was locked down. That weekend, both came home.

We thought it might be a number of weeks. They were thinking two to three. I was thinking a month or a bit more.

That ended up being months on end. They spent more of 2020 in our home than in their own places.

The economy screeched to a halt, trips were canceled, schools were closed. And our medical system started to strain, faltering under the weight of one illness closing off some areas, while filling others.

It seemed like every day, there was some new shift, new discovery, new point of vulnerability. And in its wake, we, as a country and a world, strained to cope. The grief poured out in anger and despair. Some continued their grief in the world of denial.

And still, the numbers climbed. Families lost loved ones. Spouses lost partners. The world lost citizens. To the point that we could no longer truly comprehend the numbers. Some people recalculated by throwing caution to the wind. Others recalibrated to a life in isolation, hoping that was safe.

One year later. What a year!

Oh, and it isn’t over! Although there are plenty of places and people trying to move on, we are still in the midst of a crisis. While there is a place, in the not-so-distant future, where we get back to a life much more similar to a bit more than a year ago, we aren’t there yet.

And we are also now seeing that the pandemic will not end equally. It hasn’t impacted citizens equally, and the end will come just as unequally. But it will come. How do we get there? I hope together, and I hope a bit wiser.

In this week’s Thriveology Podcast, I think about the shifts and impacts of this past year.

Many times, it can feel like an obligation. Instead, I suggest we see it as an opportunity. Even in tough moments (actually, especially in tough moments), we can make a shift from fear to thanks, from lack to sufficiency.

But today, just for a moment, let’s assume you DON’T want to thrive. In fact, you want to… well, do the opposite of thriving! You want to be miserable and live a smaller life. You want to feel stuck and frustrated. (I’m not going to even explain WHY you would want to do that… let’s play a little mental game and pretend you just don’t want to thrive.)

What then?

How would you go about NOT thriving? How would you really make yourself as miserable as possible?

In this episode of the Thriveology Podcast, I start in on my Top 10 List of How NOT To Thrive. I cover 5 top ways to NOT thrive in this episode, and follow up with the other 5 in the next episode.

Why in the world would I do this?

Because if you know how to NOT thrive, then you can NOT do the NOT’s. You can do the opposite, and move toward thriving. It is also a good way to run through the list and see if you find yourself falling into any of the non-thriving traps. They are all around us! And sometimes, we are doing them… not even realizing it.

This pandemic has stripped us of many feelings of control. It more often feels like life is disrupted and dangerous. Early in the pandemic — but far enough in that it was clear we were headed down a long path — I was wondering why it took me so long to process that we were in for a long-haul… with implications for every segment of life. Why had I “missed” the signs?

Denial. That is what I realized. I had been playing the denial game.

Which reminded me that I was experiencing a grief response. I was in grief! From the pandemic. Well, the pandemic losses and impact.

Over the next few weeks, as I talked with individuals and organizations, I noticed that we were all in collective grief, as well as experiencing the individual grief. And as the pandemic has continued, I have noticed that people are experiencing the different stages of grief at different times. That very fact seems to be at the root of much of the struggles I see played out on social media and regular media. Clashing stages.

Still, stages. Grief comes in stages. Elizabeth Kübler-Ross noted 5 stages. Her colleague, David Kessler, has more recently added a potential 6th stage (an aspirational stage for many). The point of describing the stages is not so much to force people on through the stages. It is more for being able to name the stage for what it is. The capacity of looking at where you are and naming the stage gives a sense of control. And when we have some sense of control, we can choose whether we are where we want to be, or if we would rather shift. The shift becomes an option.

Or we can just name the stage and know that is what we are experiencing.

What stage of grief are you in? I discuss the 5+1 stages in this week’s episode of the Thriveology Podcast. Listen below.

That had me pondering… how long is information valid? Sure, I would not likely want to read a computer book about the Windows 98 operating system, or about the coming “Y2K crisis.” But what about transformational information? When does that lose value?

Human brains have not changed in structure for millenia. Which is why we still garner insight and understanding from books written millenia ago. Ancient thoughts and texts still illuminate us these days.

Which brings me to my guest this week on the Thriveology Podcast. I asked Donald Robertson to talk with me about some pretty old thoughts. No, Donald is not millenia old. But the philosophy he espouses and teaches is. Donald is a modern Stoic philosopher, drawing on ancient Stoicism and what it offers to us in our current world.

And in our current pandemic situation, Stoic thought has LOTS to teach us. In fact, Stoic thought is the underlying philosophy of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the cornerstone of modern mental health counseling.

Donald discusses the relevance of Stoic philosophy in today’s world, and how we can apply it to the pandemic in which we find ourselves. Listen in as Donald Robertson gives some powerful help in dealing with our thoughts and our emotions in the midst of today’s (and future) struggles.
